James Alexander appears to have been a descendant of the Clan MacAlexander of Kintyre, Scotland. His son William Alexander claimed the vacant title of the original Earl of Stirling of Scotland, on the basis of being the Earl's nearest male heir, and not on the basis of being the Earl's direct descendant.
