Dr. James Girard Blower
Dr. Blower was born March 21, 1878 in Staffordshire, England, the second son of John and Emma Bentley Blower's 11 children. Hoping to better their lives, the Blowers accepted an offer of paid transportation to the coal mining region of southern Ohio from Emma's wealthy uncle, Stephen Bentley, owner and distributor of hardware tools throughout Pennsylvania.
In 1888 the Blower family moved to America, settling in the prosperous coal mining area of Derthick, Ohio. James was just 10 years old when the Blowers arrived in the area, moving into a tiny four room house in secluded Seldom Seen Hollow, where just five other families lived. His father was quickly promoted to mine inspector of Mine No. 10, allowing the family to soon move into a larger house in Glouster Village.
James went to school there and began working in the coal mine at age thirteen, while continuing, at his mother's insistence, his education in Glouster night schools until he was sixteen. At that young age, he moved to Philadelphia, working as a brakeman on the Philadelphia & Reading Railway, and attending night school taught in the basement of the Baptist Temple by assistants from the University of Pennsylvania and other area colleges.
In 1901 James G. Blower entered the Medical College of the Physicians and Surgeons in Baltimore, MD. Soon after his graduation he married Blanche Morgan, daughter of a funeral director. The marriage took place on Nov. 29, 1906 in Franklin County, Ohio, and that same year he began his medical practice in Glouster, Ohio. He was also the coroner of Athens County for two years and helped start the New Peoples Hospital in Akron, where he was the surgical chief of staff. Dr. Blower was also appointed to the Ohio State Medical Board of Examiners. The doctor served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War I. He retired from surgical pracitce in 1955.
Dr. Blower went on to write at least three novels of fiction; "The Sons of Emma", "The Handle Maker of Seldom Seen", and "A Call in the Hills"; also a history of his beloved Trimble Township, "A Brief History of Trimble Township Athens County, Ohio: Its Towns, Villages and People". These books are sadly out of print now, but the library in Nelsonville, Ohio has a copy of his wonderful history of Trimble Township, with names and stories of all the fine people he knew there.

He was a former coroner of Athens County and an author of several publications.
He is survived by two sons, Dr. Edmund Blower and James M. Blower, both of Akron, one daughter, Mrs. Ross (Lois) Worthington of Connecticut. His wife Blanche preceded him in death 16 years ago.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. in Akron. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Akron.
