Parents:
Father : Albert (Vojtech) Pojman Sr.
Born in Polna Bohemia April 12, 1862- Passed away May 14, 1898 in St. Paul MN USA
Fathers Birth Name: Vojtech Pojman ( on Polna Bohemia records also Poiman)

Mother: Therezi (Theresa) Ferda Pojman
dob approx. 1866/1868 - Jan. 2, 1899

Both Parents were born in Bohemia.
Parents Immigrated to USA from Bohemia. Some references to Austria or
Czech Republic. They resided in St. Paul MN area.

Paternal Grandparents:
Josef Pojman
Marie Vacek Pojman
(Bohemia)

Brother Albert Poyman's death certificate sited Parents as being born in Austria

Both Parents Passed away in St. Paul Ramsey County Minnesota unexpectedly of Epidemic Illness. Father Albert passed away at the St. Paul MN City Hospital.

Joseph Poyman's given birth name was Joseph Pojman per 1892 records.
Joseph's Sister Anna Poymann (Pojman) was 6 months old when she
passed away in 1888 of Cholera before Joseph was born.
By 1900 after his Parents passed away, he was Joseph A. Poyman,
an Orphan, living at the large St. Josephs German Catholic
Orphanage on Randolph Street, St. Paul, MN. His brother Albert,
name changed from Albert Pojman to Albert Poyman, was at the same
Orphanage as Joseph. ( Orphaned Children at the Shelter referred to as Inmates.)
State Hospital Patients were also sited as Inmates. When Joseph and his Sister
Mary were at State Hospital setting they were Patients not Inmates per Census.
Their two younger Siblings Theresa and Jimmy were adopted by non relatives
and there was not contact with Family until they reunited many years later.
Their oldest Sister Mary, who possibly was also medically ill was placed at
a State Hospital where she died in 1915. Mary never saw her Siblings after
she was placed and Family didn't know where she was. Very sad. Joseph and his Siblings had many struggles during his lifetime after he and his Siblings were
orphaned. There were many deaths during that era and a lack of homes
for Children. It appears the Children may have lived with their Parents when their
Parents were seriously ill. Unknown if Joseph and his Siblings were ill
at the same time, but they were exposed to the illness. It appears that their older
Sister Mary may have been ill. when their Parents died. Not known. Joseph and
Brother Albert spent most of their Childhood in an orphanage setting.
Children did much work on the farm land at the orphanage. Brother Albert told his Grandchildren much about the experiences he had at the orphanage.
They survived much childhood trauma. Brother Albert appears to have had some support in place when he aged out of the orphanage that Joseph didn't. Albert Poyman did locate a Family he stayed with during young adulthood in N. Mpls MN. The elderly Widowed Woman Albert stayed with in North Mpls MN was sited
as Albert's sited as Albert's Aunt per a 1920 Census. No relationship confirmed. Albert and Joseph Poyman lost contact. Joseph endured more struggles.
When Joseph aged out of the orphanage, it appears per many newspaper articles
and Census Reports Joseph had more hardships and difficulty trying to support himself. Sadly during the time Albert and Joseph and their Siblings were growing
up they had lost all Family contact. Joseph and Albert did spend some time at
the same orphanage. They many wonderful Pojman Relatives that likely would
have helped them if they could have located them in the legal system.
Not known if that happened due to the serious illness their Parents died from, quarantine, the name change, language barriers, gaps in the legal system
prioritizing Child Welfare, Child Protection issues etc. There were many deaths
during that time from serious illness and a lack of homes to care for the children.
It appears placing Joseph and his Siblings with relatives didn't happen due to
system issues. Joseph and his Siblings were never able to find out where their
Parents were buried.

After their Parents died, Joseph's older Sister Mary (Pojman) Poyman was
placed at a State Hospital. Possible Mary had the same serious illness their
Parents died from initially . She passed away 15 yrs later without ever
leaving the State Hospital. Back in that era and up until about the 1960's (?)
there was a lack of medical placement facilities for persons with serious
medical conditions, such as Tuberculosis, other illness. Quite often, those persons
were also placed at State Hospitals back then. Many never left and died there.
Many had Depression, other Mental Health Symptoms. Those were very
difficult times that lacked resources and legislation to get help for orphaned
children and disabled adults. It appears Joseph too spent many years at the
St. Peter State Hospital. Not known if the De-Institutionalization MH advocacy
and legislation at that time led to Joseph being able to live in a less restrictive environment . This writer and Family knew Joseph's Brother Albert well.
Albert's childhood story was very sad, but Albert survived and overcame
much hardship and by early adulthood he had much support from Family.
Despite being adopted by non - relatives, Brother Jim endured much
Childhood abuse. Sister Theresa was fortunate she had a nice adoptive family.

After Joseph was reunited with his Siblings much later in life, his life drastically
improved. Their Brother Jimmy who lived with his Adoptive Mother
long after he served our Country in the U.S. Military during the War, lived at
U.S. Military Home for Disabled Veterans the rest of his live. (Veterans Home In Mpls)
Brother Jimmy spent weekends living with his Brother Albert and Family after they reunited. After he was much older, Joseph had the love and support from his Siblings, Family he didn't have for most of this life. The Siblings historical reunion changed all their lives. Being together again as a Family meant much to all of them.

There is still much focus and need to improve this situation today.
Joseph and his Siblings survived an era many years ago that lacked
many child welfare needs. Once reunited with Family, Joseph is
fondly remembered. Century later there have been improvements since the late 1900's but there are still gaps needing improvement in the Child Welfare and Child Protection Foster Care System. All the Children in this family were separated
due to their Parents deaths and they lost lost contact with each other most of
their lives. The children were likely exposed to the deadly disease while
living with their Parents. Not known if any of the children got the disease,
but it may have also been a factor in their placement. Prior to their Parents
illness, their happy Family was doing well, aspiring. After their Parents
unexpected deaths the Family endured many hardships, ( Their large Family
Home their Parents had just purchased a few years before their Deaths was
demolished after their Parents Deaths by abt 1900 and a new home built
on that same property. Not confirmed but possible this had something
to do with their Parents illness as viewing real estate transactions, it
appears it was not a home that needed to be demolished by abt 1900.
Aunts and Uncles had started their Families and all had small children at
the time Joseph's Parents became ill and passed away. Brother Albert
spoke to his Grandchildren about the many hardships they endured
during their children. Albert worked hard at the orphanage and had
a place to stay some time after he left the orphanage. Joseph didn't.
Joseph didn't know where his Family Members were and was alone.
Joseph appeared to be in survival mode when he was
desperate for shelter and food with nowhere to go or stay
during very hard times and the Great Depression. ( Newspaper articles
also site desperation, other. ) Joseph wound up institutionalized
from abt 1912, then by 1918 and again by 1920 to 1950 including St. Peter MN.
A 1912 Winona Newspaper article sites a Cold and Hungry Desperate Teen
with lack of nerve and a kind heart, headlines "Kind Heart His Ruin "
He didn't have the heart to follow through while demanding money
during times of desperation. (More to this) Early on Brothers Joe and Albert
stayed at the same Orphanage for a short while and were separated again .
Joe had Relatives searching for him for years after he was orphaned and
separated from Family. Sadly, the separated Orphaned Siblings
lost contact with each other and their Aunts and Uncles during the legal
processes. Their last names were changed. Relatives who could have
helped didn't know where they were . Joseph had many obstacles. As a
Child, Joseph lacked the supports and Family to help him as he was being
shuffled around in orphanages. By WWI Registration he was
incarcerated and then transferred to Facility in St. Peter MN. Joseph Poyman
spent many years in St. Peter MN. He had a tough times for many years until he
reunited with his Brother Albert Poyman and other Siblings some time after
abt 1950. He searched for his Siblings for many years. Albert owned the
Poyman Grocery in No. Mpls. (They were all searching for each other. ) Once he reunited with his Brother Albert Poyman who lived in No. Mpls MN he was
welcomed by Family . Joseph had a much better life after he was reunited
with Family who loved him. "Uncle Jimmy " is remembered fondly.

** In Loving Memory of "Uncle Joe" Joseph Poyman **

Joseph Poyman is missed, loved and remembered forever in the hearts
of all who loved him. Both Joseph's Parents passed away unexpectedly of
a serious possibly epidemic illness when he was a child. Joseph and his
four siblings were orphans. Joseph and his siblings got placed in different
non - relative settings, two adopted. Joseph and his brother Albert
grew up in the St. Joseph's German Catholic Orphanage
when it was in St. Paul Minnesota. They were sited as inmates on Census
reports at the Orphanage and worked hard on the farm acreage at the orphanage.

Their brother Jimmy who was adopted found Albert some time after abt 1942 or
after 1950 Census and the three brothers reunited. They eventually reunited with their sister Theresa. Their sister
Mary passed away in 1915 and they never had the chance to see her again
after their Parents died. Albert coped better with their
difficult childhood and reached out to Joseph. Joseph's Grand Niece
is not aware of Joseph ever getting married or having
any children. Joseph is fondly remembered
by his grandnieces and nephews. Joseph is
survived by many grand nieces and grand nephews in the Twin Cities MN area
Nebraska. ( Brother Albert's Grandchildren)
Joseph likely also has relatives in California. ( Sister Theresa Epper Day's Family)
It does not appear per Niece that Joseph Married or had Children.

Joseph's Family of Origin and Siblings:

Parents burial information not known. Family has been searching
for Joseph's Parents burial information for years in the Twin Cities Metro area.
So far, not found. Parents names very different on so many different
records. Many calls to many cemeteries around St. Paul, Mpls, Twin Cities
metro and surrounding areas using a variety of possible spellings.
Parents graves not located.

Crystal Lake Cemetery Office Staff aware of Joseph's Grave Marker
needing date of death inscription. Joseph's
burial was Jan. 10,1980 per their records.
Albert Poyman's Family attended Joseph's
Funeral services.

Joseph's Parents died unexpectedly when he was young. All Children placed
elsewhere in non relative settings after parents unexpected death- names of Mary, Albert & Joseph Poyman were changed from Pojman to Poyman just before or after Parents died and children placed elsewhere. Family was intact in a 1895 MN Census. The Family lived in the home their parents purchased at 353 Duke St. St. Paul, MN. After the parents passed away or as of 1900, a "new home" built there in 1900. Unclear why. The parents purchased their home there in 1887 according to St. Paul Daily Glove Archive. All children located elsewhere in a 1900 Federal Census. No further information anywhere found about Joseph's parents Albert & Therezi Pojman. Parents immigrated from Bohemia.( a couple references for Bohemia and Austria. The only info found cites them living in St. Paul MN intact as a family in 1895 via a MN Census with children Mary, Albert, Joseph and Theresia. They died between 1897 - 1900 approx. Brother " Jim " born 1897 was not on either census. Albert and Joseph remained in the same orphanage most of their childhood. All siblings were reunited in later years and Albert's children knew him well when he reunited with Albert later in life. Joseph and Albert placed in St. Josephs German Catholic Orphanage in St. Paul together. ( last names changed, Albert given the Middle name Benedict) more to all this history in Joseph's brother Albert' Poyman's Memorial.
Sibling Mary (Pojman) Poyman was placed in a facility in Rice Co. MN. Younger Siblings Theresa and Jim were adopted. Their parents died , the family was split up, the children became orphans, placed elsewhere. The children had many hardships and struggles, some had a very tough time after their parents passed away.

Joseph Poyman is buried at Crystal Lake Cemetery in N. Mpls MN. Confirmed 2013 with Crystal Lake Cemetery Staff. There are no other Poymans or Pojmans at Crystal Lake. Joseph purchased his own plot at Crystal Lake, it is not part of a family plot, it was a sole purchase. He lived in Mpls area much of his adult life. He lived in the 55403 area of S. Mpls MN prior to his death. It does not appear per Albert's MN grandchildren that he was married or had children. Joseph's Nieces would like to know more about Joseph's history, get photos, learn more about their Pojman Family history, find where Joseph's Parents are buried, more about his surviving Sibling , etc. Family remember going to his funeral, visiting his grave in N. Mpls.

Family is searching for more Pojman/Poyman Family history.
Much Family history found via the Pojman Surname.
Poyman was surname the family kept after the children's parents passed away
and the children were placed elsewhere.

Intensive search for generations for Joseph's Parents place of Burial.
Most likely St. Paul MN. Many cemeteries contacted
and re-contacted asking for different spellings of their last names as each
parent was in death index with wrong spelling of their names.
Joseph and his siblings never located their parents
graves prior to their passing away.

other Family Members info or Memorial Links are found.

to note:
Cemetery informed that Joseph's grave marker does not include his dod.
They report he did not pay for that marker engravement in his
burial arrangement. Writer informed great niece of the situation.
Joseph is not laid to rest in a family plot. If accurate per Cemetery,
It appears he may not have had that added
to his burial package he prepaid for himself. Not known.

after 1950 Census and the three brothers reunited.

----------------

Bio in progress. Rough draft, to be edited and some info deleted after
other Family Members info or Memorial Links are found.

Not known.
