Asheville - Senior Police Officer Robert Austin Bingaman of Asheville died Tuesday, October 29, 2013 in the line of duty. He was 37.
A native of Delaware County, PA, he was the son of Robert Allen and Donna Mae Stewart Bingaman of Pennsylvania.
A graduate of Academy Park High School in Sharon Hill, PA, he was on the Dive Team for Folcroft Swim club during high school.
He joined the United States Marine Corp in 1996 and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC where he was promoted to Sergeant before his honorable discharge in 2000.
Senior Police Officer Bingaman honorably served with the Asheville City Police Department since 2007 and was currently assigned to The Traffic Safety Unit. A loyal and respected officer, he was committed to those he served and laid his life down to protect them.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Genevieve Ledbetter Bingaman; daughters, Hailie, Kaila and Madilaine; brothers and sisters, William I. Bingaman, Boyd W. Bingaman, Rebecca M. Bingaman, Michael J. Bingaman, Matthew D. Bingaman and Sarah E. Bingaman and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, November 4, 2013 at Biltmore Baptist Church, 35 Clayton Road, Arden with Reverend Clark Henderson officiating.
Interment will immediately follow at Western NC State Veteran's Cemetery in Black Mountain.

Police Officer Robert Bingaman was killed in a single vehicle crash when his patrol car plunged off of the Jeff Bowen Bridge on I-240, onto Riverside Drive below.
Asheville Police Chief William Anderson said Tuesday afternoon that officer Robert Bingaman died in the crash.
"Despite the efforts of emergency personnel and our own officers who responded to the scene, officer Bingaman succumbed to his injuries," said a visibly shaken Anderson. "It goes without saying that this is a great loss for our department, the City of Asheville and our community."
The Bingaman family released this statement:
"We, the family of Senior Police Officer Robert A. Bingaman would to express our deepest gratitude to the Asheville Police Department and the City of Asheville for their loving assistance and generosity towards our family and friends. We also would like to express gratitude to the Asheville Community, in which Robert loved so much, for their loving prayers and condolences. Robert loved what he did and he was doing what he loved to do when the Lord called him home. Robert served proudly as a Sergeant in the Marines, serving two floats in the Mediterranean and South America. Robert was proud of his accomplishments at the Asheville Police Department. He loved his traffic team members and his radar. Robert was a role model to his younger siblings, not only as a kid at heart, but as a source of strength and guidance.
