U.S. Congressman. After completing preparatory business studies, he was elected a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1803-05, 07). During the War of 1812, he served as a Colonel in the Ohio State Militia. After the war, he was a United States receiver of public moneys at Canton, Ohio and Wooster, Ohio, (1813-19). In 1819, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Congresses, reelected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress and elected as an Adams to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses, serving until 1829. After leaving Congress, he was appointed clerk of the court of common pleas of Wayne County, serving (1831-36), was the Ohio Secretary of State, (1841-44) and was Treasurer of the United States, (1850-53).
