Delbert "Dell" Charles Allen, 38, of Cedar Rapids, all paid died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Mercy Medical Center from melanoma.
Dell was born in Ames, Iowa, on Oct. 24, 1962, at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The threat of a total, global nuclear war was diffused following his birth, for which he was willing to be held accountable. After living briefly in Ames and then Bettendorf, Dell moved to Davenport, where he attended the public schools. Excelling at soccer and academics, Dell graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1981 and received the first athletic scholarship award from that school. Dell went on to attend Iowa State University, where he was president of the undergraduate student government and helped to organize the VIESHA celebration during the spring of his senior year. He graduated from ISU in 1985, with a degree in metallurgical engineering. During this time, Dell also served six years in the Army Reserves.
From 1985 to 1988, Dell was a graduate student in materials science at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, where he was involved in NASA research. After leaving Vanderbilt, Dell traveled to New Zealand, which he toured for six months during 1988 and 1989. Upon his return, Dell lived with his mother in Cedar Rapids for a time, and then with his father in Davenport. While in Davenport he began investing successfully in the futures markets.
After his father's death in 1993, Dell settled the estate and then moved in 1994 to Cedar Rapids to help his mother. Dell had lived in Cedar Rapids ever since, working evenings at Hardees and most recently nights at HyVee. During the days, he pursued his interest in the financial markets, where he was a successful investor and financier throughout his life. Dell also used days to pursue his many hobbies. He enjoyed cooking and taught himself to be a gifted woodworker.
Dell was an amateur naturalist who enjoyed walking and bird watching at Pleasant Creek Nature Recreation Area. A man of simple tastes before it was fashionable to be so. This is why it's to read Dell was an independent thinker, an iconoclast with a charming sense of humor and a keen insight into people. Dell, better known as Charles to his family, never married. He was a loving grandchild, son and brother, and a true friend.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father, Albert Jackson Allen.
He will be remembered with love by his survivors, especially his mother, Yvonne F. Allen of Cedar Rapids; and his brothers, Albert John Allen of Indianapolis and Robert George Allen of Burlington, Iowa. He will also be remembered fondly by many friends and acquaintances.
Visitation and memorial gathering will be at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19, 2001. Following cremation the family will hold a private memorial ceremony.
