Son of John Zeigler and Rosana (Morgan) Zeigler. Married 1st on 11 March 1851 to Elizabeth A. Stambaugh, who died in 1853. No children. Married 2nd to Anna M. Carr, with whom he had Angus, Aden, William, Harry, Homer, Malissa Lamison, John, Elsie Reed, Ida Clabaugh and George. Married 3rd to Caroline (Berkey) Long with whom he had Gertrude May Sell. Stepfather of Susan Jane Penrose, Sadie E. Kuhn and Emma Retta Beegle. Brother of Sarah McNulty. Michael's burial is not listed in the Carson Valley Cemetery book, published by BCGS.

Lifelong resident of Blair County Passes Away at Old Folks Home of Brethren at Martinsburg

WORKED AS BOATMAN ON PENNSYLVANIA CANAL

Greater part of His Life Was Spent in Farming, His Home Being in Allegheny Township

Michael Zeigler, one of Blair county's oldest residents, died this morning at 5 o'clock at the Old Folks' home at Martinsburg. He was within three months of being 93 years old and death resulted from the infirmities incident to his great age.

Mr. Zeigler was born on Jan. 8, 1828, in what is now called The Loop, in Frankstown township, then in Huntington, and he had resided here all his life. He was a son of John and Rosanna Zeigler, pioneers of the Juniata valley.

At the age of 18 he started life as a boatman and plied the old Pennsylvania canal from Hollidaysburg to Columbia, continuing at this work for a number of years. He then married and went to farming where the city's filter beds beyond Canan station are now located. Afterwards he occupied the Burns farm at Burns Crossing, and later he bought a farm in Allegheny township near Cross Keys and he lived there for more than forty years.

Retires Twelve Years Ago

Twelve years ago he retired from the farm and he and his wife moved to Cross Keys, where they lived until last year when they came to Altoona and made their home with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Simon O. Sell of 2605 Seventh avenue.

Some time ago he and Mrs. Zeigler, who is now 86 years old, went to live at the Old Folks' home. While his educational opportunities were rather limited, Mr. Zeigler was a great reader all his life and up until his final illness he read the daily papers and his church paper regularly and kept thoroughly posted on all that was going on in the world. For some years past his hearing was very defective and the papers were thus a great consolation to him.

Mr. Zeigler was always greatly devoted to his home and for many years he was never away at night. He rode on a train but once or twice in forty years. He was very successful as a farmer and was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends, being a man of the highest integrity. He was of a most genial disposition and throughout his life until quite recently he had excellent health. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren for many years, being one of the founders of the congregation at Carson Valley.

Had Been Ill Ten Weeks

Mr. Zeigler had been at the home since the second week of April and he had been ill for a period of ten weeks.

He was thrice married. His first marriage was to Mary Stambaugh. His second wife was Anna Carl, and to them were born 11 children, the following of whom survive: Edward, residing in Illinois, Harry S., Homer L., George H. and Mrs. B.B. Reed of this city, and Mrs. Ida Baisor of Eldorado. His third wife, by whom he is survived, was Caroline Berkey. To this union there was born one child, Gertrude L., wife of Simon O. Sell, of 2605 Seventh avenue. There are also two stepdaughters, Mrs. Andrew Penrose, of Sarver, Pa., and Mrs. Emma Beegle of Scottsdale, thirty-seven grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren.

The body will be brought to the home of Mrs. Sell tomorrow and the time of the funeral will be fixed when word is received from the son who resides in Illinois."
