James Melvin Sauls, 83, passed away on Monday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Melvin was born in Wayne County on March 24, 1933 to the late Nathan and Nancy Perry Sauls. For many years he co-managed A&P Grocery Store and Edgemont Meats in Goldsboro. Melvin served in the North Carolina National Guard and retired after 30 years of service. As a long-time member of Grace Baptist Church, he was instrumental, through the years, in many programs and was a strong stabilizing force in the church operations and functions.

Melvin will be fondly remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and brother. He was a man of God who loved his church family and was very devoted in his faith.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 9, 2017 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service celebrating Melvin’s life at 11:00 AM in the chapel. Interment will follow in the Aycock Cemetery.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Adell Medlin Sauls; daughters, Beverly Jo Sawyer and husband John of Mebane and Mary Louise Lewis of Clayton; and his sister, Jean Hare of Stantonsburg. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kari Powell, Jeremy DeWitt and wife Keron, Ryan Fields and wife Hope, Timothy Sauls Jr., Kevin Sauls and Anna Lewis; eleven great-grandchildren, and one step-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his son, James Timothy Sauls; sister, Ruth Turnage and Gladys Garner; and his brothers, Titus Sauls and Johnny Sauls.

The family will like to extend special gratitude to Melvin’s caregiver, Gayle Jones and to his wonderful neighbors, Raymond and Linda Gregory.
