Marilyn was the third daughter of Ralph and Effie (Stickney) Kinkade. She also had a younger brother. She was born on McKinley Road in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington on February 3, 1927. Her father worked for Peterman Manufacturing Company until 1932 whereupon the family returned to the Kittitas Valley where her dad bought acreage and built a home. The girls were active in 4-H. Marilyn's older sister, Doris, recalled that Marilyn's calves sold for 50 cents. When Marilyn was about 13, the family returned to Tacoma to live. She had a brief marriage to Donald Chessman.
Marilyn married Frank Ripley when she was 29 years of age. They had two sons, Allan and Pat, and one daughter, Susan. They lived for many years in Anchorage, Alaska. Her family experienced the great Alaskan Earthquake in 1964. Their home was damaged; however, and they were forced to move. About 1968, Marilyn and Frank relocated to Puyallup, Washington. They lived across the street from her parents for many years. Eventually they purchased her parent's home at 415 5th Avenue Northeast, which they remodeled extensively. Grandchildren Pat and Michaela Ripley lived with them for a few years. Marilyn lost her son Patrick to cancer in 1980 and her husband in 1993. She and Frank had been married 46 years. She resided in the family home in Puyallup until 1999, when she moved to Port Orchard. She then relocated to a retirement facility in Puyallup, where she met and married her third husband, William Ralph Courtney in December 2000. On February 3, 2007, Marilyn celebrated her 80th birthday at O'Farrell's Restaurant in Puyallup, Washington with friends and family. Marilyn passed away in Puyallup on September 21, 2013 in Puyallup at the age of 86 years. A service was held in Puyallup's Masonic Lodge with burial in Ellensburg.
