HARTFORD (WATE) - A Cosby volunteer firefighter and the driver of an 18-wheeler truck died Monday at 6:50 a.m. in a crash on Interstate 40 near mile marker 443 and the Foothills Parkway exit in Cocke County.

Cosby Volunteer Fire Chief Chris Gregg confirms a member of his department, Clayton Ball, 33, died in the crash.

Ball had been with the fire department for more than ten years, and was a lifetime member.

Gregg said the driver of a truck also involved in the wreck died, but Gregg did not provide a name of the driver.

According to Chief Gregg, Ball was a passenger in a wrecker truck that was pulling a load of pallets. The tow truck was rear-ended by another vehicle.
Elmer "Clayton" Ball, age 33, of Cosby, passed away Monday, September 16, 2013. He was a life time member of Cosby Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his mother, Geraldine Ball. He is survived by his father, Clifford (Brenda) Ball; grandmother, Merlie Ball; brothers, David (Annette) Ball, Wayne Ball sisters, Susie (Stephen) Swann and Wilma Ball all of Cosby; nephews, Dakota Ball, Corey, Andrew, Caden Swann, and Jaegan Webb; nieces, Caelan Ball, Jessica Webb, Whitney Webb and Destiny Daniels; girlfriend Amanda Anthony and her children, Breanna and James Anthony and Zack and Sarah Mantooth. Funeral services will be held 7:00 pm Wednesday, September 18, 2013 in Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Stephen Swann officiating. Burial will be held 11:00 am Thursday, September 19, 2013 in Webbs Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Wednesday at Manes Funeral Home prior to the funeral.
