Elwood R. Kelley, a.k.a. "E. R." as he was known to family and friends, was born in Idaho. He met and married Barbara Edith Nickle (then, Green from her first marriage and divorce) in Southwest Washington State. He was a logger by trade. After they married, they decided to start their own logging business. They had saved enough money to buy one logging truck. He did the logging and Barbara did the "hauling". They built their own home in Kelso, Washington until they lost it with a fire. Then, they built their second home in Kalama, Washington. Meanwhile, they were both working hard, saving more money to expand their logging business. When they were well established with Kelley Logging in Longview, Washington, they had expanded to 16 trucks and the business was flourishing (1974).
