Saxton was the son of writer Sam Walter Foss and his wife Carrie Conant. He was a member of the Harvard class of 1910 and served in World War I as a member of Co. F, 9th Inf. Regt., 2nd Div., A.E.F. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross. His citation reads: "The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Saxton C. Foss, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Medeah Ferme, France, October 8, 1918. With exceptional courage, Private Foss voluntarily advanced to flank a machine-gun nest, which was holding up the advancing battalion; and, in so doing, was fatally wounded." He is buried at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France.
