Norma Lee Rogers Bastian
(06 December 1929 - 28 August 2013)

Norma Lee Bastian, age 83, Joplin, passed away at Webb City Health and Rehabilitation on August 28, 2013 at 12:00 noon.

Her daughter, Nancy, will forever remember her daily visits to the skilled nursing facility to love and care for her Mother. Nancy's husband, John, visited Norma and that always brought good conversations. Norma enjoyed seven memorable years in the home of her daughter and son-in-law of Joplin. She loved both her Schnauzer, Duffy Daniel, and being grandma to Nancy and John's Schnauzer, Emily Marie.

Norma was born on December 6, 1929 on the Akin Family Farm in Lakeside, Missouri. Her parents were Bessie Akin Rogers and Glenn H. Rogers.

Norma graduated from Joplin Senior High School in 1947. She was a member of the National Honor Society and the Scottish Rite Rainbow Girls.

After graduating from Joplin Senior High School she worked for John Graue Motor Company of Joplin as office manager.

In 1945, she started singing in the choir at St. Philip's Episcopal Church. On April 28, 1946 she was confirmed by Bishop Spencer. At that time the Rector of St. Philip's was Father Alfred L. DuDomaine and his wife Ann was Choir Director. Norma was President of YW Matrons (this organization sponsored yearly hat shows through Ramsey's Department Store); she also joined Beta Sigma Phi and enjoyed the professionalism of this group of young ladies.

On June 30th, 1948 Norma Lee Rogers married Harry E. Bastian. They were married 56 years at the time of Harry's death in July 2004.

Norma and Harry stayed very active in St. Philip's Episcopal Church all their lives. Norma was chairwoman of St. Martha's Guild (cooking most church meals and preparing all receptions with excellent assistants). She also was chairwoman of St. Vincent's Guild (training and keeping all vestments ready for the church acolytes). Norma taught Sunday school and loved training every small child the Ten Commandments.

Norma was a full-time homemaker once children were born into this happy marriage beginning in 1952. She prepared many homeroom parties at Eastmorland Elementary School and was a member of PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization). The proper raising of her family, cooking, serving God, and taking care of loved ones fulfilled her life.

Once Norma was in her later years of life, she thoroughly enjoyed classic old movies and had an extensive collection of videos and DVD's. She was very knowledgeable about the actors and actresses in these films. She loved history and especially the history of England.

Norma was preceded in death by her father, Glenn Rogers, (October 1, 1988), her mother, Bess Rogers, (July 8, 2002), her husband, Harry Bastian, (July 18, 2004).

She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Lee Messick and her husband, John P. Messick, of 2100 Laura Lane; one son, Bob Bastian and his wife Debbie (location unknown). She has one grandson, Kevin Christopher Bastian, (location unknown). Kevin you will always be loved by us!

Norma believed in living under God's rules. Enjoying every birthday that God has blessed each of us with and leaving your worries to God because you are only wasting away the current day that you might not be able to enjoy ever again! She believed that children should be brought into this world to love and treasure for all their life providing them guidance as becoming adults themselves.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 12:00 noon at St. Philip's Episcopal Church with Father Frank Sierra officiating.

The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 11:30 until service time. Norma will be available for viewing at that time in the sanctuary of the church.

Special thanks to Maudie, Norma's roommate at Webb City Health and Rehabilitation. She has been an angel sent from God to love and watch over Norma plus a very special friend to Nancy. Also, deep appreciation to Dr. Raj Patel, her internist for many years, plus Avalon Hospice (Sara and Melissa) providing excellent comfort care. A kiss blown from heaven goes to Susie Pinson, Theresia Danner, Sandie Davis, Bill Johnson, Cecilia Fisher, Sue Ferguson, her church family, and specific "caring" employees of Webb City Health and Rehabilitation. Brandy and Regina are given special blessings for end of life nursing care to Norma. Father Frank Sierra always brought her communion from St. Philip's Episcopal Church and their visits brought the Church alive to Norma. Additional appreciation to Blake, a young man eleven years old that volunteered to play the piano professionally for the residents every Wednesday this summer. He brought smiles to Norma's face and they had great visits!

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in memory of Norma to St. Philip's Episcopal Church to assist with many remodeling needs. Please send memorial funds to: St Philip's Episcopal Church, 706 Byers, Joplin, MO 64801 with a notation "Memorial for Norma Bastian".

Mother, God placed me in your arms 57 years ago and your friendship and guidance has been a blessing and will always continue to be for me! Mom, my husband, John, will always be your one and only son that has loved you prior to and through our married life together.

Love Always, Nancy
