He was a former state building inspector for Franklin County and a projects engineer for several public building projects including Mohawk Trail Regional High School in Buckland from 1965 to 1967, the Highland Village Housing Development in Shelburne Falls in the early 1970s, the Charles H. McCann Vocational Technical School in North Adams in 1968 and the North Adams City Hall project from 1972 to 1973. He also oversaw the building of the Eaglebrook School in Deerfield.
He owned and operated Buckland Wood Products in the early 1980s and was a former auxiliary policeman for Shelburne from 1958 to 1976. Prior to enlistment in 1942, he was employed by the former Greenfield Tap & Die Co., as a machinist.
A World War II Navy veteran, he served aboard the USS Independence and survived the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and several other medals. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8503, both in Shelburne Falls.
Surviving him are his wife of 53 years, the former Jean L. Stewart; a son, Hal K. of Buckland; two daughters, Jane S. Morse of Shelbune Falls and Wanda L. Ankers of Buckland; three brothers, Joseph F. Jr. of Greenfield, Donald R. of Charlemont and James R. of Byron, Ga.; four sisters, Emmeline Hebert of Greenfield, Kathryn Pierce of Buckland, Robina McCabe and Barbara Upton both of South Deerfield; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Burial in Colrain West Branch Cemetery.
