Sometime in the early 1880s Charles moved his family from Midway to Louisville. The 1900 and 1910 censuses show him as married to Lizzie and living in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY.
Charles and Lizzie had two known children, both born while they lived in Midway. Daughter Lillie S. Bates was born about 1877. She married Alex Edwards who was born about 1880 in KY. Son Eugene Bates, born May 1879, married Modjeska (maiden name unknown) in 1898. She was born in Kentucky March 1880. Both Lillie and Eugene probably married in Louisville, KY. and censuses show that each lived with Charles and Lizzie for a while.
It is thought that Rev. Bates pastored a currently unknown church in the Louisville area. It is known for sure that in 1884 he and some other pastors helped organize the First Virginia Avenue Missionary Church (then called Nebulon Baptist Church) located at 3601 Virginia Avenue in Louisville.
