George Davenport Wilson
[Add A Photo]
Born 1825...Died 1862
Company B. 2nd Ohio Infantry
Private George D. Wilson enlisted in the 2nd Ohio at age 36 on August 31,1861 for 3 years. A member of "Andrews Raiders" George was captured with the others of the raid. He was tried by court-martial at Knoxville, Tennesse, and executed at Atlanta, Ga., on June 18,1862 on charges he was a "bridge burner". Spokesman for the 7 men executed that fateful day Wilson, before being hanged stated "We are not spies, we are soldiers in the performance of our duties and your leaders know this. I do not regret dying for my country for that is a soldiers duty. The people of the North love the nation and the flag and are fighting to uphold them. I hold no hard feelings toward the south or its people but one day the "Stars and Stripes" will again fly over the ground occupied by this scaffold."
