Company Muster Roll dated April 30th, 1862 to August 31, 1862 he is 'present'. Notation on record reads ".owned his own horse since March 17, 1862 up to May 29th, 1862 at which time his horse was rode off by another man."
Company Muster Rolls from August 3rd, 1862 to October 31st, 1863 he is shown 'Absent - Sick at Louisville, Kentucky"
Company Muster Roll for November & December 1863 reads "Absent - Sent to hospital Louisville, Ky. Sept, 1862. Furloughed from hospital and died at home December 10, 1862. Company received notification of his (death) December 10, 1863.
The Muster-out Roll has the following remarks: "Died of Disease at his home in Monroe Co. Ky. Dec. 10, 1862 while on furlough.
His widow Martha 'Tadlock' Shields applied for a Widow's Pension on February 10, 1864 - Application 44,881 - Certificate 143,855
Note: When the Nashville National Cemetery was established, most of the soldiers buried at the Tompkinsville Cemetery were moved there. Zachariah Shields was not. It is recorded on the U.S. Burial Registers, Military Posts and National Cemeteries list that he was "retained by his friends."

He married Martha Tadlock in Greene County, Tennessee on June 16th, 1846
The 1850 Census has them in Greene County, Tennessee (his age is 25)
The 1860 Census has them in Monroe County, Ky. (his age 37)
