After an illness of ten days duration with pneumonia Mrs Anna Sample Johnson, wife of Ashley C Johnson, the well-known hardware merchant, died at noon yesterday at the family residence, 316 South Ninth street. The announcement of her death was a great shock to her many friends. Mrs Johnson was born in Lafayette, March 12, 1858, and was a daughter of Robert W Sample. She was a graduate of Vassar College and was a refined and cultured woman. Her entire life was spent in Lafayette and she was noted for her personality and admired for her many graces of mind and person. She possessed a charming personality and took an active part in social affairs for a number of years. She was a member of one of the oldest and most prominent families in the city and was well known and had many friends. She was married to Mr Johnson, who survives, October 30, 1879. She also leaves one son, Dudley Johnson, her father and the following brothers and sisters: John G and Richard B Sample and Mrs Edgar V Burt. She also leaves a niece, Miss Elizabeth Ewry. The funeral will be held from the home of her father, Robert W Sample, 311 South Ninth street, Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock. Rev Edwin W Dunlavy will officiate and the services will be public. The burial will be in Springvale Cemetery. and will be private friends are requested to omit flowers. (Lafayette, Indiana Journal March 3, 1914)
