BROWNING, JAMES. 1856-1934 LANIER
James Browning, a son of Wright Browning, was born in Clinch, now Lanier County, in 1856. He was married in Clinch (now Lanier) County, Oct. 22, 1874, to Elizabeth Lewis, born 1855 in Berrien County, daughter of Nicholas Lewis (Vol. III). They had seven children, viz:
1. David B. b. 1875, m. Sparty Fender (1st c.) Dec. 13, 1896.
2. James b. 1877, m. 1st Matilda Browning Ost c.), dau. of John, March 5, 1904; 2nd Lola Croley.
3. Harriet b. 1880, m. J. Guilford Fender, Apr. 10, 1906.
4. Richard ("Buck") b. 1883, m. Lessie Carter.
5. George b. 1885, m. Fannie Browning, Ost C.). dau. of John.
6. Wright b. 1887, Mrs. Minnie Pallacier (nee Wall).
7. Mary b. 1890, m. 1st. Allison; 2nd Eugene Sirmans.
Mr. and Mrs. Browning were members of the Primitive Baptist Church. They united with Mt. Olive Church near their home (in present Lanier) about 1885, and were baptized.
Later, on March 22, 1890, they were received into Empire Church (across the Alapaha River, in Berrien County) by letter from Mt. Olive Church. They remained members there two years, and were dismissed by letter April 23, 1892. They transferred back to Mt. Olive and died members there. He died in March, 1934, and his wife died at the age of 93 years; they were buried in the Fender Cemetery.
