Avery Avis was born January 20, 1857 in Aurich, Germany. In his infancy he was baptized in the name of the Triune God. In the year 1867 the parents and their four children started for America, making the voyage in a sailboat, being on the water 8 weeks, during which time they experienced the death of two children.
The family settled at Lowell, Ind., where he grew to manhood. In the year 1878 Mr. Avis decided to come west, locating at Otis where he first followed the trade of a peddler salesman and later establishing a retail store, which business he followed unto his end. From the years 1897 to 1915 Mr. Avis served Otis and its community as its postmaster. He entered the state of hold wedlock with Miss Sopia Brack in the year 1896 to which union four children were born. Mr. Avis was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the year 1906, to which faith he remained true to his last. One child and his wife preceded him to eternity.
Failing in health for some years, Mr. Avis finally fell asleep in faith on Jesus, Friday morning at 7 o'clock, July 29, at the age of 75 years 6 months and 9 days. He leaves to mourn his death three children Mrs. Hannah Hergert, Helen and Leslie of Otis; three brothers, John, Fred and Frank of this community and a host of relatives and friends. The only grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. Hergert died in its infancy.
Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.
