Roland Barthes (b. Cherbough, November 12 1915; d. Paris, March 25 1980) was one of the most prominent French intellectuals of the post-WWII period. His works are widely recognized as a decisive contribution to the configuration of the field of cultural studies, including landmark essays and books such as Mythologies (1957), The Death of the Author (1968), The Pleasure of the Text (1973) and Camera Lucida (1980).
