His name at birth was Morris. He seemed to use Maurice. Not sure if he ever legally changed his name. Medium height & build with blue eyes and brown hair as an adult. When he was born he lived on the family farm on Main Rd in Westport. Just south of Partners Book Store. His father died on his 5th birthday. Maurice attended Moses Brown School & was on the track team & played center for the football team and although very light for his position, played a very aggressive game and thru the whole season didn't find an opposing center to strong for him. Maurice took beginning physics, arithmetic (got a 98.5), spelling, composition, Greek & Roman History & bookkeeping. Maurice must also have learned some wood carvings because there are some picture frames he carved. Maurice worked for town of Westport, working on Forge Rd. to Giffords Corner. Also south to Central Village. In 1905 Maurice bought a home from distant cousin Rena (Waite) Reed's family at 38 Pine Hill Rd. Westport. The home was sold by his son Arthur on 10/17/1975. Sometime around 1906/07 Maurice lost practically all his sight when a chain broke and went across his eyes while pulling out stumps with a team of horses working for the town. Maurice had a large vegetable garden and would fish out of the Westport River and sell his catch at the corner of Old County and Pine Hill Rd or walk around the village selling his catch. Maurice spent a lot of time on the Westport River either fishing or sleeping on one of the small islands with his sons in the summer. Maurice died in a back cottage at 38 Pine Hill Rd. by hanging. Neighbor and friend Mrs. Collins called the police at 4pm after his son Arthur found him. It is believed Maurice had cancer and was scheduled to go into the hospital the next day.
