He was mustered in as a Corporal in Company E, 1st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on May 23, 1861 (New Jersey Adjutant General records list his name as "Jacob Brinisholly"). Reduced to Private on September 20, 1862, he served until he was discharged due to disability at the regimental camp near White Oak Church, Virginia on January 27, 1863.
