Early morning blaze fatal to 3, 6, and 4 year olds
An early morning fire has claimed the lives of three children.
The dead were identified as Alicia D. Burt, age six, Antwan D. Austin, age three, and Alex D. Austin, age four.

The children died in a fire that destroyed their Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard apartment Monday morning shortly after 3 a.m.

According to Paul Reese, Grenada Fire Department spokesman, firefighters were called to an apartment at 28-A MLK Blvd. Monday morning at 3:25 a.m.

"The second floor apartment was fully involved in fire when the fire trucks arrived," he said. "The firefighters entered the apartment from the south and the west to fight through the fire to search for survivors."

Two adults and one child had already exited the apartment, Reese said, and were transported to Grenada Lake Medical Center (GLMC). "The bodies of three children, ages six, four, and three, were recovered," he said.

Reese said the Grenada County Sheriff's Department arson investigator and Grenada County Coroner were called to the scene. "The cause of the fire has not been determined," he said.

Memorial information and funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time.
