Joseph Chambers died age 70 in Peru, Miami County, Indiana on 3 November 1899 from tuberculosis of the lung. He was the son of John and Polly Chambers, both from Virginia. He married his brother's (Sterling) widow, Sarah J. Barr Chambers on August 20, 1878. They had two children together: Rosetta May Chambers, and Daniel F. Chambers. He helped raised his dead brother's children: Joseph, Albert, Andrew, Sara Jane, Emanuel, Louisa, Harriet Louise, and Della.

He was a farmer all of his life and was respected in the community and loved by all.

He was buried at the Shrock Cemetery per his death certificate, but no gravestone has been located.
