... shoot the head off of water mocassins along the roadside, once killed a rattlesnake, and hunted for bobcats, but never found any. Her husband worked so much there was "no time to hunt". They did enjoy 'deep sea fishing' and had good luck. She hooked a sailfish once, but couldn't land it. Her son Rueben came to the rescue and got it into the boat. After the hurricane gates were finished around Lake Okeechobee, the Arbogasts were supposed to head back north, but there was always some other construction job. Buford built jetties, worked on the Flagler Bridge in Palm Beach, worked on sea walls in North Palm Beach and Hutchinson Island. After 20 years of moving around with various jobs, Alice told Buford "I ain't moving no more". They settled in Lake Park 26 years ago [1957], when "there was all open space, just old ragged brush on the north side of Park Avenue." The only building on Singer Island where they went to the beach, was an unfinished hotel which had to be demolished because one of the children playing there was seriously injured. They built their house on Flagler Blvd. in Lake Park because "there was no place to live when we moved here". Even though hunting is a thing of the past, the Arbogasts can look back on an active and happy life in Florida with their two children, Rueben and Gwendolyn, Mrs. Charles Walton, who lives in Raleigh, N.C. They are among the pioneers of the north county area who remembers when it was still possible [and legal] to go out and bag a gator. [1983 article in a local, now obsolete, newsweekly]
