Miss Agnes Irene Cates, 97, passed away on Saturday, Dec 18, 2010. Miss Cates was born on Sept. 6, 1913, in Rex, Ga., to the late John Clifford Cates, and the late Tommie Ophelia Graden Cates. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Alma Pauline Cates Hulsey, and Ada Jeanette Cates Crumbley; brothers, John Isaac Cates, and Henry Hiram Cates.
Irene was baptized at, and joined, Tanner's Baptist Church at the age of 14, and has been a member since. At the time of her death, she was the oldest member of the church. She worked in the clerical field, and was a caregiver in her family all her life. Irene's family expresses special appreciation to her caregiver, Beverly Williams, and to the staff of Sacred Journey Hospice.
Miss Cates is survived by her brother, E. H. Cates, Sr., of Bossier City, La.; nieces, DiAnne and Plez Dukes, of Milner, Ga., Billie Jean Chauvin, of Bourg, La., Brenda Cates of Millen, Ga., Pam and Taylor Strickland, of Winder, Toni and Wallace Christian, of Ellaville, Laurie and Steve Wright, of Jackson; nephews, E. H. (Sonny) and Wanda Cates, Jr., of Mooringsport, La., Paul (Pete) and Peggy Hulsey, of Colbert, Ga., Tommy and Joan Hulsey, of Commerce, Doug and Kathy Hulsey, of Braselton, Ronnie and Jimmie Hulsey, of Buford, Gary and Boon Cates, of Marion, Texas, Michael Cates, of Ellaville; numerous other relatives, church family and friends.
Funeral services for Miss Irene Cates were held Monday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m., at Tanner's Baptist Church. The Rev. Charles Huggins and the Rev. Dave Riley officiated. Interment followed in the Tanner's Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Gene Walton officiating. Friends visited the family on Sunday, from 6 p.m., to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Miss Cates lay in-state at the church from 1 p.m., until the hour of service.
