When Mary Ann was about 4 years old, her mother died and she and her brother Harmon were taken in by her father's sister, Hannah (Ames) Ocker and her husband Abraham Ocker of Butler, IN. Even though her father eventually remarried, Mary Ann & Harmon remained in Butler with the Ockers. Her life was lived mostly in and around Butler where she was an active member of the United Brethern Church.
