Marvin Marcus Boyles was born on Mar. 7, 1880 in Randolph Co., North Carolina. Named "Marcus" after his father, he was the son of Rev. Marcus Wrightman "M.W." Boyles (1842-1892) and Susan A. (Alice ?) Wood (1846-1895).

Marvin's father, Marcus, was born in Lincoln Co., NC. An old-time Methodist Episcopal circuit preacher, he was born in/near Laurel Hill located in Lincoln County. He was just 49 when he died during the flu epidemic of 1888-92. He was stricken with the flu in late December of 1991, died on Jan. 15, 1892. Over one million people died worldwide during this pandemic.

Marvin's mother was, Susannah Alice "Susan" Wood (1846-1895). She was born in/near the little community of Henry located near Lincolnton in Lincoln Co., NC. She died at the age of 46 in Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC. Both Marcus and Susan are buried in the Lexington City Cemetery in Lexington, Davidson Co., NC.

Marvin's paternal grandparents were Rev. Josiah Adolphus Boyles (1816-1894) and Anna Elizabeth "Annie" Yount (1819-1905). Both were born in Lincoln Co., NC, both died in Burke Co., NC. They are buried in the Salem Methodist Church Cemetery in Morganton, Burke Co., NC. Josiah was a Methodist circuit preacher.

Marvin's father (M.W. Boyles) and paternal grandfather (Josiah A. Boyles) both fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. While they did not own slaves or even support slavery they felt compelled to defend their NC homes. It is also interesting to note that Marvin's father (Marvin Wrightman Boyles), grandfather and great-grandfather were all old-time Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) preachers.

Marvin's maternal grandparents were John Henry Wood (1810-1891) and Elizabeth Catherine "Katie" Bess (1818-1900). Both were born in Lincoln Co., NC and spent their entire lives there. They are buried in the Zion Methodist Church Cemetery in Morganton, Lincoln Co., NC.

On June 3, 1914, Marvin married Mamie B. Hightower (1887-1983) in Guilford Co., NC. Marvin was 34 years old when they married. Mamie was 27. Born in North Carolina, she was the daughter of William Daniel Hightower (1844-1925) and Elizabeth Frances "Fannie" Burton (1854-1941), both born in Caswell Co., NC. Marvin and Mamie did not have any known children.

Marvin died on Oct. 27, 1854 in Greensboro, NC at the age of 74. He is buried there in the Forest Lawn Cemetery. At the time of his death Marvin and Mamie had been married for 40 years. The inscription on his marker reads "HE THAT WALKETH UPRIGHTLY WALKETH SURELY" .
