Peter Ackerly was one of 11 children born to John Paul Ackerly and his wife, Sarah "Sally"Miller. Peter and his brothers inherited their father's many land holdings in Augusta and Rockbridge Counties. Peter married Lydia Shafer (daughter of John Shafer & Mary Pence) on Nov. 6, 1828 in Rockbridge Co., Va. Together they would have 14 children. Peter was a well to do farmer and well respected man in Rockbridge Co.They lived in the Cedar Creek area, which is the creek that flows under the Natural Bridge. They lived on the farm on Plank Road for all their married life. He and his family worshipped at High Bridge Presbyterian Church . He followed his wife's death by eleven days. They were married for 52 years.
