U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to Elkhart County, Indiana, in 1836, and he later graduated from Indiana University. He moved to Iowa, in 1856, studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Jefferson, Iowa. During the Civil war, he served as Captain in command of Company H, 10th Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, (1861 to 1863). After the war, he engaged in mercantile pursuits in Boone, Iowa and was a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives, in 1868. In 1871, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses, serving until 1875. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he relocated to Silverton, San Juan County, Colorado, in 1875 and was elected the San Juan County Judge and served for three years. Moving to Denver, he engaged in the practice of law, also in the real estate business and was president of the Denver Fire and Police Board, (1893 to 1894).
