Modeste Louise Dettloff, 85, a longtime resident of Rogers City, died Wednesday, April 10, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Terry Scranton of St. Johns. She had made her home there since September of 1992.
Born January 11, 1911 in Albion, she was the daughter of William and Marie Noble. As a young child, she moved to Presque Isle County with her parents, settling in Bismark Township.
In 1930, she began her career as a teacher, Working in the country schools around Presque Isle County. On November 28, 935, she married Alfred F. "Dave" Dettloff in Bismark Township. He preceded her in death in 1989.
In 1937, she interrupted her teaching career to raise her three children, then resumed teaching in the country school in Presque Isle County in 1959. She received a bachelor's degree in social studies from Eastern Michigan University. She retired from Rogers City Public Schools in 1975, capping a 23-year teaching career in which she taught at nine different grade levels.
Active in her community, she was a longtime member and first-ever president of the Rogers City Women's Civic League. She helped spearhead an effort among community leaders and businessmen to build the extended Care Facility at the former Rogers City Hospital. She also was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Rogers City.
With her husband, she enjoyed many trips throughout the United States, Mexico and Europe. She had a deep interest in her family's genealogy, often taking trips to the east coast to trace family roots. She enjoyed arts and crafts, especially creating her Faberge-style eggs. She also like to collect corn husk dolls, especially those made by her niece, Judy Norman.
Surviving are two sons, Charles (Joan) Dettloff of Rogers City, and Tom (Lynn) Dettloff of Boulder, Colorado; a daughter, Linda Scranton of St. Johns; 10 grandchildren; a niece and nephew.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 20, at 11 A.M. at St. John Lutheran Church in Rogers City with the Rev. Harold Molzan officiating. Internment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Rogers City.
