Civil War: Company K, 7th California Infantry

Henry Calvin Gay was born at East Randolph, Vermont, in January 1839. Some time thereafter he relocated to California. During the Civil War he enlisted for 3 years as a private at Downieville, Sierra County, November 9, 1864, and was mustered into Company K, 7th California Infantry. Private Gay was promoted to corporal December 1, 1864. Corporal Gay mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco April 26, 1866. The 1866 Great Register for San Francisco County indicates Henry Calvin Gay was a fruit dealer residing at 525 Pine Street who registered to vote June 27. He married Mary Campbell at San Francisco about 1870. The 1880 US Census found him still in San Francisco living with Mary and four children. Henry was then employed as an expressman. Henry died at San Francisco November 30, 1892. Soon after his death, Mary filed for a Civil War widow's pension at San Francisco December 13, 1892, and received application No. 566,274 and certificate No. 386,041. Remains reinterred to this cemetery after 1939.
