Ferne Lucille Childs Adams, also known as "Grandma BlackHawk", passed away Feb. 12, 2013, at the Age 98½ in Nashville, Tenn.
She was born July 21, 1914 in an old log cabin in Brown County. Her parents were Sarah Iva Settles and Robert Walter Childs. In April, 1934, she was married to Thomas Wayne Adams. They resided in Indiana and moved to Tucson, Ariz. in 1947, where they lived for over 50 years. In Feb. 1996, Ferne moved to Nolensville, Tenn., where she lived with her daughter, Dorothy and husband, Hoy D. Allen, Sr.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Wayne Adams; brothers, Allen (Neva), Clarence "Bud" (Ruby), and Wayne Childs; and sister, Ruby Voland (Howard); son-in-law, Hoy D. Allen, Sr.; grandsons, Van Wesley Stephenson I, and Karl Lee Allen; great-grandson, Jack Wesley Dodson; nephews, Ken Adams and his son, Jon Adams, and Elmer Hembree; brothers-in-law, Marion (Wilma), Noble (Mary), and Howard (Maude) Adams; sister-in-law, Pauline Houser (Robert Grey and Paul Houser).
She was a great fan of the singing group BlackHawk of which Van Stephenson was a member. She did much promotion for them, thus becoming known as "Grandma BlackHawk". Ferne worked in Tucson at Pima County Hospital. She retired from Tucson Medical Center as a dietitian in 1976. She then worked part-time at St. Joseph's Hospital for awhile. Her life revolved around her family and her hobbies of crocheting, knitting, quilting, crafts and traveling.
She is survived by two children, Margaret "Peggy" Hise (Al) and Dorothy "Dot" Allen; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, May 18 at 2 p.m. at Parkview Church of the Nazarene, 750 Old State Road 46 West. In lieu of flowers, make a donation to The Van Stephenson Memorial Cancer Research Fund, send c/o BlackHawk, P.O. Box 121804, Nashville, TN 37212. Arrangements are entrusted to Woodbine Funeral Home, Hickory Chapel.
