Jan (John) Amerman
circa 1766-1828

Jan (John) Amerman was born on Long Island in 1766 and Baptised on February 16, 1766. He was born to Cornelius Amerman/Amberman and third wife Abigil Okely. He married Ann Brinckerhoff about 1784. Jan and Ann had seven children: Isaac 1785-1858, Jannetie (Jane) 1787-1866, Albert 1789-1830, Cornelius 1791-1864, Jan (John) 1794-1879, Nicholas 1796-1884 and Sarah.

1. Isaac was born February 27, 1785. He married Hannah Mills who was born October 19, 1786 and she died September 20, 1850. Isaac died June 29, 1858; Will L8, page 277 Queens County; he was buried in the Springfield Gardens Cemetery, Jamaica, Queens, New York.

2. Jannetie (Jane) was baptized March 4, 1787 at the Jamaica Dutch Church. She married Edward Cornell at Jamaica Dutch Church on April 20, 1800. Jannetie died July 17, 1866 at the age of 79; she was buried in Springfield Gardens Cemetery, Jamaica, New York.

3. Albert was baptized May 21, 1789 at the Jamaica Dutch Church. He married Maria Marsden on September 19, 1830 at The Jamaica Dutch Church.

4. Cornelius was born January 29, 1791 and died January 31, 1864. He had no relationships and no children.

5. Jan (John) was born on January 20, 1794 and baptized March 9, 1794 at The Jamaica Dutch Church. He married Margaret Smith who was born October 21, 1795 and she died July 15, 1879. Jan died October 31, 1879 at the age of 85 and was buried at Springfield Gardens Cemetery.

6. Nicholas was born on April 9, 1796 and baptized at the Jamaaica Dutch Church. He first married Sarah Golder and later married Mary Smith. She was born September 14, 1793 and she died September 18, 1866; she was intered at Springfield Gardens Cemetery.

7. Sarah Amberman is mentioned in Jan's Will, but there is not much information on her.

Jan was a weaver by trade; member of the Jamaica Dutch Reformed Church; his Will was dated May 24, 1813, and was probated December 27, 1828; LF page 195 in Queen's County. His family was on the 1790 Census, Queens County, Jamaica Town, page 150. The following is his Will:

In the name of God Amen I John Amberman (weaver) of Jamaica in the County of Queens and in the state of New York, being weak in body but of a sound and disposing mind and memory and understanding (blessed be god therefore) do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say principally and first of all I commend my immortal soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it, and my body to the earth from whence it was taken to be decently entered at the discretion of my executors hereafter named and appointed and as to such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with this life I dispose thereof as follow (to wit).

Item I do Will and order that after my decease that my executors hereafter named do sell of and dispose of all my lands real and personal estate at public venue or otherwise as shall appear to them best excepting my house and kitchen furniture and linens which I leave for the use of my wife Anna as long as she remains my widow and the money arising from such sale I Will and order to be first applied towards the payment of my just debts and funeral charges and the over-plush I dispose of as follows.

Item I do give devise and bequeath to my well beloved wife Annie the sole use of all my house and kitchen furniture and linen for her use so long as she remains my widow and after her decease or if she should happen to marry either of which should happen first then I Will and order that the said house and kitchen furniture and linen if any remains to be sold by my executors and be equally divided among my seven children or either of their lawful heirs namely Sarah, Isaac, Jane, Albert, Cornelius, John and Nicholas.

Item I do give, devise and bequeath to my said wife Annie the sole use of all real and personal estate not otherwise disposed of for her support so long as she remains my widow the money to be put out as interest with good security by my executors and the interest arising from the said money to be paid to my wife Annie so long as she remains my widow and after her decease of if she should happen to marry either of which should happen first. Then I will and order that the said money and everything remaining of my estate to be equally divided share and share alike among my children namely Sarah, Isaac, Albert, Cornelius, John and Nicholas provided always that if either of my said children should happen to die leaving no lawful issue before their legacies becomes due then I will and order their legacies if it should so happen be equally divided among my surviving children or their lawful heirs and all that I have herein given to be divided among my children I do give devise and bequeath to them and their heirs forever.

Item I do give devise and bequeath to my four sons namely Albert, Cornelius, John and Nicholas the sum of seventeen dollars and fifty cents a piece to each of them in lieu of a cow to be paid to each of them by my executor as soon as convenient after my decease and all that I have therein given to my wife Annie I have given her in lieu of her dowery.

And lastly I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my wife Annie and my friend Aury Remsen and my friend Nathaniel Nostrant executors of this my last Will and Testament allowing this and no other to be my last Will and Testament.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty forth day of May in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand eight hundred and thirteen.

Know ye that at Jamaica in Queens County, on the twenty seventh day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and tweenty eight before Nicholas Wyckoff Esquire Surrogate, of our said county, the last Will and Testament of John Amberman late of the County of Queens aforesaid deceased, (a copy whereof is hereunto annexed,) was proved and is now approved and allowed by us; and the said deceased having, whilst he lived, and at the time of his death, goods, chattels, or credits, within this state, by means whereof the proving and registering the said Will, and the granting administration of all and singular the said goods, chattels, and credits, and also the auditing allowing, and final discharging the account thereof doth belong unto us; the administration of all and singular the goods, chattels, and credits of the said deceased, and any way concerning his Will, is granted unto Aury Remson, Sr. and Nathaniel Nostrant two of the Executors in the said Will named, they being first duly sworn well and faithfully to administer the same and to make and exhibit a true and perfect Inventory of all and singular the said goods, chattels, and credits; and also to render a just and true account thereof when thereunto required.

I give devise and bequeath to my youngest son Nicholas my weaving loom together with all my weaving tackling the chest containing them whether in or out of the chest all and every of them I give to him his heirs and assigns forever. NOTE This was omitted in the body of the Will and at the request of the Testator was added before signed or sealed.

This Will was probated by Nicholas Wyckoff on 03 January 1829.
