Mrs. Rachel Letha Fountain, wife of George W. Fountain, Sr., DeRenne Avenue and Middleground Road, died yesterday about 5 o'clock after a short illness. Mrs Fountain was born in Lowndes County, August 4, 1870. Mrs. Fountain is survived by her husband and three sons: Calhoun Fountain of Tampa, Fla.,; Chris A. and George Fountain, Jr., both of Savannah; one daughter, Mrs. Katie Simmons of Savannah; five sisters, Mrs. Mary Fletcher of Adel; Mrs. Carrie Ratliff of Adel; Mrs Sally Willis of Tifton; Mrs. Ida Dixon of Blackshear; and Mrs. Mattie Powell of Florida; and two brothers, Barney Martin, of Hastings, Fla., and Bill Martin, of Southwest Georgia.
Note: All of the children named are step children. Letha Martin only had two biological children, Elizabeth Blanchard, who d. bef. 1910 and Frank Blanchard, Jr. who d. 1925.

Rachel Letha Martin shows in her father's household at Cat Creek, Lowndes Co, GA 1880, age 8. Her father was William Columbus Martin and mother was Isabelle Peters. Letha married Benjamin Franklin Blanchard 25 Oct 1891 in Lowndes Co., GA.
Frank Blanchard had been married twice before. He was born Jan 1856 at Winton, Hertford Co., NC to Henry & Mary Blanchard. He arrived in Georgia about 1880 and by 1881 he showed in the Savannah city directory as a carpenter. He married Katie Hickey on 22 Sept 1882. They had two children, Catherine (Kate) Blanchard (mar. Henry H. "Harry" Simmons in 1908 & both bur. Laurel Grove Cem. North) and Mary Blanchard. Katie Hickey Blanchard died about 1888. He remarried 13 May 1889 to Mollie Ketterbon. She died the next year in child birth, as did the child. Frank married Rachel Letha Martin the next year. They had two children:
1. ELIZABETH BLANCHARD, b. 1903, d. before 1910.
2. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BLANCHARD, JR. b. 1907.
The Blanchards show on Savannah's city directory listing from about 1893 until Frank Blanchard's death, 26 Feb 1914. The following year, 1915, lists Mrs. Rachael L. Blanchard, widow, home at 742 Anderson in Savannah. Earlier the address had been 840 Anderson. This was the same address given by Rev. A.R. Powell as a reference for Frank Blanchard, his brother-in-law, in his 1907 military pension, to account for his tenure in Savannah, 1902-04.
In 1916, Rachel remarried to George W. Fountain, a grocery store owner. The 1920 census shows the Fountain family with the first three sons of George W. Fountain, Sr. from his previous marriage, and the last son, Franklin Blanchard, a step-son, Rachel's son from her marriage to Mr. Blanchard:
1. CALHOUN EDWIN FOUNTAIN, b. 11 Oct 1900, d. Dec 1969, Jacksonville, Fla. Mar. Corrie Ophelia Risher, dau. of Jefferson Davis Risher & Ada Hill. Calhoun Fountain lived in Tampa, Fla. before moving to Jacksonville, Fla. where he worked for the Dept of State as an immigration inspector.
2. CHRISTOPHER ADAM FOUNTAIN, b. 20 Aug 1902, d. May 1986, Savannah, Ga. Mar. Frances T. Mock. Chris Fountain was a police officer in Savannah and worked his way up to Chief, Homicide Dept., retiring after 32 years on the force. See article from Savannah Daily News about the Savannah City Police Band (he played clarinet.)
3. GEORGE W. FOUNTAIN, JR., b. 15 Dec 1904, Savannah. Lived his entire life in Savannah, Ga. Mar. Nora Annette Blackwalder who was b. Rowan Co., NC, dau. of Horace & Marg. Smith Blackwalder. Geo. W. Fountain, Jr. was a carpenter and maintenance engineer with Certain-Teed, Inc. He d. Savannah 11 Apr 1984. Nora remarried to Mr. Wall & she d. 2000.
4. FRANKLIN BLANCHARD, b. 3 Nov 1906. Son from Rachel Letha Martin's marriage to Benjamin Franklin Blanchard, Sr. Frank Blanchard, Jr. d. 2 Feb 1925, age 19, in Savannah.
By 1927, Rachel's mother, Mrs. Isabelle Peters Martin, was living with them at their home at 3805 Montogmery Ave. in Savannah. She died there in 1929. By 1930, George and Rachel L. Fountain are living alone. By the late 1940's they had moved in with son, Chris A. Fountain. George Fountain, Sr. d. 1956 and Rachel Letha Martin Fountain d. 1957. They are both bur. Hillcrest Abbey East Cem. in Savannah.

Personally before me, the Ordinary of said County, comes Mrs. G.W. Fountain, of said County, who, after being sworn, on oath, says that she knew Mrs. Isabelle Martin of said County, and that the said Pensioner was on the Pension Roll of said County, at the time of death, which occurred in Berrien County, in this State, on the 26th day of April, 1929, and that the Pensioner left no widow surviving, and no estate of any value sufficient to pay funeral expenses, which amounted to the sum of $185.00, per sworn statements fully and completely itemized hereto attached.

In 1916, Rachel remarried to George W. Fountain, a grocery store owner. The 1920 census shows the Fountain family with the first three sons of George W. Fountain, Sr. from his previous marriage, and the last son, Franklin Blanchard, a step-son, Rachel's son from her marriage to Mr. Blanchard:
1. CALHOUN EDWIN FOUNTAIN, b. 11 Oct 1900, d. Dec 1969, Jacksonville, Fla. Mar. Corrie Ophelia Risher, dau. of Jefferson Davis Risher & Ada Hill. Calhoun Fountain lived in Tampa, Fla. before moving to Jacksonville, Fla. where he worked for the Dept of State as an immigration inspector.
2. CHRISTOPHER ADAM FOUNTAIN, b. 20 Aug 1902, d. May 1986, Savannah, Ga. Mar. Frances T. Mock. Chris Fountain was a police officer in Savannah and worked his way up to Chief, Homicide Dept., retiring after 32 years on the force. See article from Savannah Daily News about the Savannah City Police Band (he played clarinet.)
3. GEORGE W. FOUNTAIN, JR., b. 15 Dec 1904, Savannah. Lived his entire life in Savannah, Ga. Mar. Nora Annette Blackwalder who was b. Rowan Co., NC, dau. of Horace & Marg. Smith Blackwalder. Geo. W. Fountain, Jr. was a carpenter and maintenance engineer with Certain-Teed, Inc. He d. Savannah 11 Apr 1984. Nora remarried to Mr. Wall & she d. 2000.
4. FRANKLIN BLANCHARD, b. 3 Nov 1906. Son from Rachel Letha Martin's marriage to Benjamin Franklin Blanchard, Sr. Frank Blanchard, Jr. d. 2 Feb 1925, age 19, in Savannah.
By 1927, Rachel's mother, Mrs. Isabelle Peters Martin, was living with them at their home at 3805 Montogmery Ave. in Savannah. She died there in 1929. By 1930, George and Rachel L. Fountain are living alone. By the late 1940's they had moved in with son, Chris A. Fountain. George Fountain, Sr. d. 1956 and Rachel Letha Martin Fountain d. 1957. They are both bur. Hillcrest Abbey East Cem. in Savannah.

Application for Pension Due to a Deceased Pensioner

Personally before me, the Ordinary of said County, comes Mrs. G.W. Fountain, of said County, who, after being sworn, on oath, says that she knew Mrs. Isabelle Martin of said County, and that the said Pensioner was on the Pension Roll of said County, at the time of death, which occurred in Berrien County, in this State, on the 26th day of April, 1929, and that the Pensioner left no widow surviving, and no estate of any value sufficient to pay funeral expenses, which amounted to the sum of $185.00, per sworn statements fully and completely itemized hereto attached.

5. When and where did the command of your husband surrender or discharge from the Service?
"I do not know."
6. Was your husband personally present with his command when it was surrendered or discharged?

7. If he was not present, state specifically and clearly where he was at?
"At home."
8. When did he leave the command?
"1862.

"Wounded and ill with fever."
