Clarence Brevard Abernethy, age 80, of The Woodlands, Texas, formerly of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away on January 24, 2007, at his residence at Silverado Senior Living in The Woodlands. Clarence was born August 7, 1926 in Gaston County, North Carolina to George R. and Grace Abernethy.
He is survived by his sister, Vernell Stevens of Warsaw, NC, three daughters, Judy Rose of Greenville, SC, Sandy Dworkin of China Spring, TX, and Terry Briggs of Rusk, TX, and one granddaughter, Cheryl Netto of Huntsville, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Gloria, one brother, George, and three sisters, Lena, Mildred, and Sarah.
Mr. Abernethy served in WWII as a radio operator on a Navy LSM from July 1944 to June 1946. He attended Mars Hill College, earning an A.A. in Literary Arts in 1947, then transferred to Queens College in Charlotte, earning a B.S. in Accounting in 1950. He began work for Esso's Accounting Center in Charlotte in 1950. He transferred to New Jersey in 1956, along with a team of 8-10 others to bring the N.J. refinery computer systems on line, then transferred back to the Esso Accounting Center in Charlotte in 1962 to help bring that division on line. He retired from Exxon Company, USA's Marketing Accounting Center in Houston, Texas in 1986, after 36 years of service.
Mr. Abernethy was a member of First Baptist Church of The Woodlands, and served as deacon there for a number of years after retirement. He was instrumental in designing and implementing the sound system at First Baptist, and served as head of the Sound committee for many years. He was an avid reader, a weekend golfer, and a bowler as well, playing on leagues for many years along with his wife Gloria. He had a keen interest in the natural world, and enjoyed traveling by car to many U.S. national parks, hiking, bird watching, and even whitewater rafting, always carrying his camera to capture some of nature's beauty to share with his family and friends.
He spent the last years of his life at Silverado Senior Living in The Woodlands, Texas. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the employees of Silverado - The Woodlands, and Silverado Hospice for the dedication and loving care shown to their father by the entire staff during his final years. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of The Woodlands on Saturday, January 27, 2007 at 2 p.m., with Pastor Earl Holman presiding. Interment will be privately held at Forest Park Cemetery in The Woodlands.
