Donald Wayne Zieman was born on Sunday; June 18, 1939 in Hartley; O'Brien County, Iowa. He was the son of: Harold and Arthadale Santage Zieman. Donald was baptized into the Christian faith at an early age and renewed his faith by rite of confirmation. Before leaving home, he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Royal; Clay County, Iowa, where he was an active member and held offices of the Walther League for Youths and participated in many church activities. He received his high school education in Royal Consolidated School of Clay Township. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Air Force and served four years. Upon discharge from the Air Force, he attended his freshman year at University of Iowa, and transferred to Iowa State University majoring in Electrical Engineering, enrolled in U.S. Air Force ROTC, graduated in November 1965, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He attended Air Force Pilot Training at Vance AFB, Enid, OK, and served in the Far East as a pilot for four years stationed in Vietnam, Japan and Korea. He also was an Instructor Pilot stationed at Laredo Air Force Base; Webb County, Texas, and was stationed at numerous other bases throughout the U.S. He was decorated with an Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Distinguished Unit/Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Overseas Ribbon Short Tour (Air Force), Overseas Ribbon Long Tour (Air Force), Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Training Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry, Foreign Service Medal (Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.) He was a basic military training honor graduate. Don received a Professional Engineer�s License from Wisconsin. He served with the National Park Service for 25 years, living in Lakewood, CO (Denver area) in which he served as a design electrical engineer with Denver Service Center, and as Director of Public Utility Management for all 367 parks for the National Park Service, Department of the Interior. He traveled to approximately 250 parks in all 50 states being actively involved with public utility contracting and engineering for gas, water, wastewater, electric, steam and highway projects which took him over a million miles of travel with United Air Lines and other air lines. He received multitude of awards for superior service. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Society of Military Engineers, International Toastmasters Club, Chairman of Electrical Engineers for the Denver Service Center of the National Park Service. Don served 41 years of government service and retired with the Federal Civil Service System and Air Force Reserve, and became a farmer south of Royal where he lived until moving to Spencer. He was issued a Century Farm certificate in which had bought and owned land which belonged to his great-grandfather, Peter Christensen. Donald Wayne Zieman, age 73, passed away on Thursday; May 9, 2013 at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls; Minnehaha County, South Dakota. Those left to mourn his passing are: His brother, Roger Zieman and wife, Kay of Royal, IA; Shirley Berberich and husband, John of Royal, IA; Mary Jane Peterson (friend Clarke) of Fremont, Nebraska, nephews, nieces as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. May they rest in peace. May God bless his memory and give strength to those that mourn.
