After his father's death in 1900, James worked briefly as a shirt cutter in his cousin's factory in Derry.
He sailed for Montreal in 1908 and was a witness at the 1910 wedding of his first cousin, Kathleen Patterson, who married John Dunlop at Stanley Presbyterian.
He then spent seven years studying at McGill University earning his Divinity degree, including three years with the COTC (Canadian Officers Training Corp) before volunteering for the 1st Quebec Regiment during WWI.
On 8 June 1921 James married Anna Rosalind Nichols in Winnipeg. They lived in Caron, Saskatchewan, before settling in Wellington South, Ontario, to raise their son and daughter.
His second wife was Marie Russell with whom he had a daughter. They lived in Port Perry.
