Gust was born in Vathy, Samos, Greece (off the mainland of Turkey). He was the son of Steven (Stavros) Londos and Culnic Marie Sianis. He immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in 1912 Aboard the ship Ancona. He is listed as Constantinos Liontas in the register with his father listed as Stavro. Gust made his way to Port Huron, Michigan where he married Frances Lewandowski. They had 6 children, one of which, a son, died in infancy. Frances and Gust later divorced. He remarried Ellen Pellum and they had a daughter.

Gust had many careers throughout his life among which were cobbler, waitstaff and restaurant owner.
