Lieutenant Junior Grade Braseth was one of 253 crew Killed In Action aboard the U.S.S. Hoel (DD-533) when the destroyer engaged a superior Japanese naval force during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Philippines. The Hoel received more than forty strikes from 14-inch and 8-inch shells from one battleship and one heavy cruiser of the Japanese Imperial Navy, and sank after the engine compartments were flooded.

His name is inscribed on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in Taguig City, Philippines.

His family erected a cenotaph honoring him in the family plot in Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks, Grand Forks County, North Dakota.
