Her KY Birth Certificate #34397 lists her given name as Ethel and date of birth as July 21, 1920; however, her tombstone is inscribed June 21, 1920 in error. She was known by her given name "Ethel" by her family; however, she didn't like that name and later changed it to Thelma.

Married 1st Brethel James Mercer in 1942, who was killed in action 21 Sep 1944 in France while serving in the U.S. Army during WWII; married 2nd Ashby White in 1945, who was killed in a vehicle accident later that year; married 3rd Henry L. Bryant about 1947; married 4th Wallace M. Watts in 1958, and married 5th Samuel J. Holcomb, who she was only married to for a short time prior to her death. She had a son by her 1st marriage and no children by her other marriages.

Buried next to her 3rd husband, Henry L. Bryant. Ethel elected to have surname BRYANT inscribed on her tombstone; therefore, this memorial established under BRYANT instead of HOLCOMB.
