Alfred William Lasher Jr., a long-time resident of Houston, Palm Beach and West Palm, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on February 21, 2013. Born December 31, 1921 in New York City to Alfred and Isabel Mendelson Lasher, he attended New York's Franklin School, and also played semi-pro baseball. He pursued a Political Science major at Vanderbilt until his last semester when war broke out in the Pacific. While at Vanderbilt, Alfred was a radio commentator for WSM Nashville and announcer at the Grand Ole Opry. He played football under Bear Bryant at Vanderbilt and was a lead in school plays.
Alfred served in the Naval Air Force during WWII. Prior to discharge, he married Bernice Weingarten of Houston. After service, he began his career with J Weingarten Inc. supermarket chain, later becoming Senior Vice-President, in charge of operations. He was also an early stage investor in a number of companies that are now public. Alfred was an active fundamental and technical trader in the equity and currency markets. In 1959, Alfred was elected to the Board of Directors of the University of Houston. While on the Board, he became a student, obtaining a B.S. in Geology in 1967. He was an early Director of the Houston Livestock Show, served as Director of The Bank of Texas, President and Director of the Harris County Society for Crippled Children and Adults, Vice President of the President's Advisory Commission to the Department of Agriculture during the Nixon Administration, and Co-Chairman of the Finance Committee of Texas for George H. Bush for President.
In 1967, Alfred joined his friend, Dean Meyers, of Houston, to form Meyers Lasher, Inc., an oil & gas venture company. About this same time, he started a pharmaceutical company with offices in Milan, Houston, and St. Croix. In 1968, Alfred married Jeanne See Perry, a life-long resident of Palm Beach. Jeanne was a syndicated columnist of Latin American affairs. They lived in Houston and Palm Beach, and together traveled throughout the world. Alfred was active, an avid hunter and fly fisherman, playing tennis and golf, spending time with his various Springer Spaniel dogs, and making friends everywhere. He was an ardent reader of history, sports and literature. They enjoyed entertaining friends at home, and at the Bath & Tennis, Everglades Club, the Sailfish Club, Palm Beach Country Club, and the Society of the Four Arts, of Florida, and the Petroleum Club and Coronado Club in Houston.
Alfred was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jeanne, in 2007. He is survived by his two sons, Alfred W. Lasher III, and Stephen A. Lasher, a daughter-in-law, Janiece Longoria, all of Houston, and grandchildren, Dr. Andrew Lasher (Melissa) of San Francisco and Katherine Ballinger (Matt) of Arlington, Virginia, Reese Lasher of Los Angeles, Hayden Lasher of New York City, and A. William Lasher IV of Houston, and beautiful great grandchildren, Joshua, Charlie, Abe and Sydney. He will be greatly missed by all those that knew him.
