Hill was educated at St John's College Cambridge where he came in touch with Methodists. He preached in the open air and was often assaulted. He built his own free Chapel, Surrey Chapel, London opened in 1783. Hill covered the country preaching to thousands. He opened children's Sunday Schools.They expanded until 3000 chilren were present.
He came to know Dr Edward Jenner and joined him in smallpox vaccination.
