Brevetted Brigadier General United States Army. At the start of the Civil War, he was a 1st Lieutenant with the 13th Iowa Infantry, which together with three other regiments formed the Iowa Brigade and later known as Crocker’s Brigade. He participated in numerous campaigns including the battle of Shiloh, the siege of Vicksburg, and the capture of Atlanta. He was promoted to the rank of colonel in November 1864. Near the end of the war, in March 1865, he was brevetted a brigadier general,the rank he held when his regiment was mustered out of service.
