She graduated from Terre Haute Gerstmeyer High School and Central Normal College, Danville, IN. In college she met Jim, the love of her life, and they were married on November 27, 1937, in Henderson, KY. She then embarked upon her lifelong career as a teacher, and she had countless happy memories of her students and colleagues, especially from her years of teaching English and Latin at Lafayette Jefferson High School.
After retiring from work, Betty and Jim lived in a golf community in Seven Springs, FL, before returning to Indiana to be closer to family. They resided in Carmel and in Indianapolis for many years, then moved to Wilmington, NC, in 2003 to be near their daughter and son-in-law.
Betty cherished her old friendships and readily made new ones wherever she lived. She was an avid bridge player, golfer, and traveler. She and Jim visited every state in the continental U.S., plus Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Europe, and Mexico. She also enjoyed watching sports on TV, in particular college basketball, and was a dedicated fan of the Boston Red Sox.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Contributions in her memory can be made to Habitat for Humanity or the charity of one's choice. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to a 11:00 AM service Friday, April 19, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, Rev. Clarinda Crawford officiating; entombment will be at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
