Inducted in the service May 29, 1942 after working in Los Angeles, California for a period of time. In service he fought in every Army in Europe. He received a citation for leading his squad during the assult of the Siegried Line. He and 700 other paratroopers were dropped 80 miles behind enemy lines. As they were leaving, their families were sent telegrams they were missing in action. Only 93 of the 700 returned. While in Anzio he was temporarily blinded and was sent to a hospital in Europe ands was later returned to active duty.
Discharged August 29, 1945 with rank of staff sergeant. Awarded EAME w/7 Bronze Stars and Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation w/OLC, Certificate of Merit and ETO.
After returning to civilian life he worked as a structural ironworker out of the St. Louis and Paducah Union.
Married June 7, 1952 to Fannie E. Eley, he has two sons. Mark. W., Ralph M. II; one daugther, Teresa Romaine and one daughter from a previous marriage, Patricia McKnight; Nine grandchildren; Eric, Ashley, Tevia, Erica, Brittney, Emily, Leah, Katie and Tom.
