Anna Gruber died peacefully at her home on April 7, 2012 at the age of 92. She was born in 1920 in Germany to George and Anna Plendl . She was raised on the family farm which is still owned and operated by family members. At the age of 17, she traveled alone by ship to San Francisco to help her Uncle and his wife. She arrived on Labor Day and was unable to depart from the ship because everyone was off for the holiday.

She lived in San Francisco for many years where she met and married her husband Hans Gruber. They moved to Santa Cruz and managed and owned restaurants in Boulder Creek for many years before they retired in Santa Cruz. She was a nanny to Robert, William and Gary Cook who she considered as part of her family and called "her boys".

Anna was very active in many organizations at Star of the Sea Church and was a dedicated worker for California Grey Bears. She was a wonderful cook, seamstress, gardener and friend. She was a devout Catholic and attended daily mass until the last days of her life.

She is survived by nieces and nephews in Germany and many friends in the United States.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 515 Frederick St, Santa Cruz CA at 11:00 am on Monday April 16, 2012. In lieu of Flowers donations are preferred to Our Lady Star of the Sea Endowment Fund in her name. Our Lady Star of the Sea Endowment Fund, 515 Frederick St, Santa Cruz CA 95062.
