Alfred Jackson was a slave born about 1812 at the Hermitage. Generally assisting with the plantation's horses, Alfred also maintained the wagons and the farm equipment. Despite the most of Andrew Jackson's slaves fleeing to freedom in Nashville when it was taken by Union forces in 1862, Alfred remained at the mansion and even stayed on after the Emancipation of slaves in 1863; working as a tenant farmer on the property.
