Mrs. Sadie L. Abernathy, 73, of 430 Pocahontas St., Ottumwa, died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 25 at 1:45 at the Ottumwa hospital after a short illness.

The daughter of Samuel Manning and Alice DeRosear Holmes, she was born in Harrisburg township, Van Buren county, Feb. 2, 1881. In early girlhood she was a member of the Harrisburg Baptist church and later transferred her membership to the First Methodist church of Ottumwa. Following her graduation from the Bonaparte high school in 1900 she taught in the rural school of Van Buren and Henry counties until her marriage to Fred B. Abernathy of Milton, Feb. 18, 1904. He preceded her in death May 6, 1951.

She was a member of the Pythian Sisters.

Surviving are one son, F. Harold Abernathy of Waterloo; two daughters, Mrs. John Burke and Maxine Abernathy of Ottumwa; three grandchildren, Mary Jo and Michael Burke of Ottumwa and Jane Ann Abernathy of Waterloo; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Harlan of Bonaparte and three brothers, James Holmes of San Diego, Calif., Samuel W. Holmes of Bonaparte and Carl Holmes of Lake View. Besides her husband she was presented [preceded] in death by one daughter, Alice May Abernathy in infancy, one sister, Dessie Holmes, and one brother, John Holmes.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Reece funeral home, Ottumwa, in charge of the Rev. Paul M. Hann, D.D., pastor of the First Methodist church, Ottumwa. Burial was in the Sharon cemetery, Lee county. Members of the Knights of Pythians were pallbearers.
